blood hags are a london-based research duo (monique todd, ella frost) investigating monstrosity as a guiding principle to liberation.

we facilitate a 3-hour offering called spilling blood.

spilling blood is a workshop-lecture that tracks blood-sucking representations in contemporary, avant-garde & artistic moving image. by examining the vampire as a “distinctly colonial” figure, we focus on depictions of blackness, extraction and transaction-based desire in afro-diasporic work. 

monique todd has a text-based practice invested in delivery, staging, speech publics and reading. her work takes the form of essays, poetry and forums. she is from London and is based there, for now.

ella frost produces images, experimental films and visual installations. their morbid interest in vampires relates to their ongoing and concurrent exploration of mortality, power, grief and sex. currently studying ma in visual anthropology at goldsmiths.

this workshop invites students, researchers, and curious minds who are interested in how speculative narratives handle race, gender, and sexuality to envision emancipation, destruction, desire, and community.

due to the fluid way the vampire is positioned and our expertise in not only visual culture but also academic theory, the erotic and our embodied experience as colonial subjects. this workshop is uniquely situated to be valuable to various disciplines from undergraduate, postgraduate and phd levels. including but not limited to; anthropology, visual anthropology, visual culture, colonial studies, cultural studies, film studies and gender studies.
